Character Info

Character's Name: Nyx Ulric
Character's Canon: Final Fantasy XV
Character's Age: 32
Canon Point: The moment Nyx makes his deal with the Ancient Kings to use their power.
Background/History: Nyx's wiki page

Strengths:

Endurance: Nyx is in peak physical condition as a member of the Kingsglaive, but even among his peers he's exceptional. The magic they use is incredibly taxing and it's standard for even veteran glaives to become sick upon using it, but Nyx can use magic in succession for long periods of time without any apparent drawbacks. He has also been shown to walk off an extreme amount of damage, like being thrown into rock structures or buildings.

Heroic Bearing: Nyx is a very loyal and straightforward man. He knows his duty and he goes above and beyond what is expected of him. He'll take extremely dangerous risks to save someone because he takes his oaths very seriously and doesn't want to lose anyone that matters to him. It's not easy to overlook him. He seems to show off a lot at first glance as his rare talent for using the Royal Family's magic is a lot greater than most.

He's generally good humored, and in some respects he seems to have fun in the midst of battle against monsters twenty times his size. If he feels fear he doesn't show it, and doesn't hesitate to throw himself at enemies many others would balk at. He likes to play an offensive defense by killing monsters before the monsters can kill them, and is highly depended on among the other Glaives. When necessary he can step forward to lead the Kingsglaive in the absence of their Captain, and has earned their respect enough to be followed without question.

Loyalty: Nyx has very few things he really cares about in his life but those that he does he is loyal to with little question. Even when there are circumstances that upset him (ie. when the King he's sworn to makes sacrifices of his city in order to preserve an unspecified future) Nyx will still not hesitate when it comes to upholding his promises or duty. He will risk his life to save people no matter the consequences to himself afterwards, and even when all else is lost he eventually gives his life to make sure his King's last wish is upheld.

Weaknesses:

PTSD: At twenty years old Nyx's homeland was attacked by the Empire of Niflheim. His sister, Selena, was lost during the attack, despite Nyx's attempts to save his family. Twelve years later this failure haunts him and follows him everywhere he goes. He still hears Selena's voice crying out, and sometimes gets lost in flashbacks. While he's functional enough to keep it from holding him back in battle, it is the root that drives him to protect his loved ones even at the cost of himself. He needs to do better than his best to make up for a failure he can never take back.

Emotional Distance: Nyx doesn't allow himself to process his emotions in a healthy way. Emotions don't really have much practical use in his life. He has a job to do and he'll do it. He hates the Empire, and his inability to let go of the attack on Galahd means it's a longstanding anger that gets swallowed down until he's in the middle of battle and can take it out by killing monsters. Not once have we seen him so much as vent his frustrations, only take the criticisms of others without doing much to defend himself. He's not seen actively grieving for any of the losses he suffers, with exception to a sharp burst of anger when Regis is murdered in front of him, that is once again pushed aside when he's reminded of his duty. The only time he's seen to really let go is at the end when he knows he's going to die anyway.

Low self-esteem: Nyx thinks very little of himself. His self worth is centered entirely around his abilities as a soldier and skills with the King's magic. His peers call him "Hero" but he doesn't like the nickname. He doesn't deserve it, not when he failed to save his family. He's convinced that without magic he's basically nothing and it would take someone he highly respects to cut through the years of hate and self-deprecation. His own goals and needs are unimportant compared to those he cares about or believes in.

Powers/Abilities:

Spell-casting: Unlike the main characters of FFXV, Nyx does not need flasks to store his spells. He draws from a source and can cast with his hands, which gives him control over the strength of his spell.
--Fire: Self-explanatory. This spell summons fire.
--Thunder: A bolt of electricity like lightning.
--Blizzard: A sudden cold snap, freezing an area around a target.
--Cure: A restorative spell.
--Teleportation: A spell to warp to an anchor, usually a weapon thrown to where the user wants to go.
--Evasion: Similar to warping, the user can use magic to phase a step to the side to avoid an attack.
--Protect: A defensive spell, the user summons a shield between him and an enemy that's made up of interlocking hexagons. The shield can take a certain amount of damage before it breaks.
--Stealth: The user can bend the light around them to temporarily shield them from sight. Used primarily to take out an opponent before it can react.

Kingsglaive: As mentioned in his strengths, Nyx is extremely physically capable. The glaive are basically the marines of Insomnia's forces. They're trained to fight an army made up of Magitek and daemons in the middle of the night, so they must be durable, strong, and fast. He's the very picture of an elite soldier.

Other Noteworthy Traits:
-- Nyx uses magic casually, like summoning fire to hold in his hand.
-- Knife throwing master, highly accurate.
-- He likes watching cartoons in his off time

Weapons & Other Special Inventory:

On his person:
-- His Glaive armor and gear, including his kukri daggers and the knives to sharpen them.
-- The Ring of the Lucii. The ring carried by the Kings of Lucis. It is connected directly to the heart of the Lucis Caelum magic crystal, and holds within it the spirits of every King that has ever worn it. The ring grants power and, with few "worthy" exceptions, can only be used by those of royal blood.

Extra:
-- Nyx owns a board with papers and tiny things that are very important to him, including a letter from his sister and a charm that once belonged to Crowe, who died on a mission. Rather than bringing the board they're on, he can carry them in a wrapped bundle to save space.
-- A teal chocobo as a pet.

Color: A purple tinted blue. Square Enix revealed that Nyx's colour is blue to compliment the nobility of the King's official purple, and he wears a "Galahdan blue" cloth with his uniform that makes him stand out among his peers.

Sample: Sample one - This was started in September but still ongoing, with comments through the past six months.
Sample two

[ OPTIONAL ] World Aspect: Havens in FFXV are safe spaces surrounded by glyphs that prevent daemons and monsters from getting close. They are typically used as campsites overnight when traveling would otherwise be exceedingly dangerous. They often are found with deposits of elemancy nearby.
To start off: All meme toplevels I posted will remain as an Ongoing thread. Though it is unlikely many of them will be used again, I will always take new threads on older memes.

He didn't want to believe it was possible, what Cassian told him, but the evidence kept stacking up. The Kingsglaive had every reason to be angry at the King in the wake of this treaty. While siding with the empire that put them in this position is still far beyond what Nyx expected any of them to be capable of, he can understand just what led them to the decision. Luche'd tried to tell them.

The attack on Crowe, after all that, was just a nail in the coffin of his denial.

Nyx pushes through the crowd, making his way to headquarters. He'd left Crowe and Cassian behind; didn't want them to get involved until he has a chance to be sure. He knows Luche. Knows where he hides when a mission doesn't go right. Where he goes to recover when he's injured. Everyone else should be at their posts, he has a chance. They can talk. He has to try to get through to him before something else goes wrong. Before they all make a mistake.

He pushes through the doors, heading out into the open space of the training grounds. "Luche!"
[Six, it's good to be home. These patrols seem to be getting longer and longer and he misses even his cramped apartment by the time they're over. Even when nothing more than skirmishes happen, it's a relief to get out of the uniform the day he gets back, wash off the grime from the road, get some rest.

Except the rest won't come. The sun's still out, filtering in through his window, and he's still got excess energy to burn off. Decided, he makes his way down to Seven Soldier, hoping to see a familiar face or two and have a few drinks to decompress.]

CHARACTER

NAME: Nyx Ulric
CANON: Final Fantasy XV
CANON-POINT: The end of the Kingsglaive movie.

DOSSIER

HISTORY: Wiki link

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?: Nyx is a very loyal and straightforward man. While other Glaives tire out easily, or get physically sick when they warp too often, Nyx uses magic like he was born to it. To the point where he'll just casually cradle fire in his hand at home for no other reason than he can.

Nyx is highly intelligent when it does come to strategy, and is capable of taking a sparse amount of clues and put them together to come to a reasonable conclusion, as evidenced when told that Lunafreya is not with the Niflheim convoy on the day of the treaty signing. It only takes him a few moments to realize something is actually amiss and learn that she was somehow taken hostage out of the city, confirming this via his suspicion that Luna's hairpin has a tracking device implanted on it. He plans ahead to already have the Kingsglaive getting ready by the time he asks for the King's permission to deploy, and though it's too late to do anything about it he is able to clue in to the resulting trap fast enough to avoid himself being caught in it.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?: As much as it's his greatest strength, Nyx's sense of duty and loyalty to the crown ultimately ends in his death. He's selfless to a fault, and doesn't hold much worth for his own life beyond what he can give for others. He seems incapable of just letting go of some things. He's haunted by his sister's death and the fact that he couldn't save her, to the point where he continuously remembers hearing her call to him for help. This is a lingering trauma that drives him to go out of his way to save others, as if trying to make up for his one failure.

He hates being helpless, and for a long time honestly believes that without the king's magic, and his own talent at using it, he's nothing. It's a notion that his own Captain reminds him of on more than one occasion, validating doubt that doesn't start to loosen until someone flat out tells him that he's worth something all on his own.

Nyx doesn't seem to allow himself to process his emotions in a healthy way.

WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?: There are three major events that shaped his life and will shape his ongoing future in game.

The first is the Niflheim's attack on Nyx's home-Galahd. The attack was devastating and as a result he saw his little sister killed while he was helpless to save her. He's still haunted by that day, and a lot of his motivations are driven by the memory of his sister and the things she believed in. Even years later, Nyx still feels like his self worth is dependent entirely on the things he's capable of doing, and how many people he can save. He ends up moving to Insomnia.

This leads almost directly into the second event. Merely a month after the attack, Galahd commits itself to aiding King Regis in fighting the empire, as many of its refugees are found compatible with the Royal family's magic. In return, Regis lends his aid to defending and restoring Galahd. Nyx and many others, including his childhood friend Libertus, become a part of the newly formed royal guard-the Kingsglaive. They are tasked with fighting off the Empire's forces as they make their way towards the capital city of Insomnia. It gave Nyx a purpose and a conduit for the anger he holds towards Niflheim for destroying his home and his family. He feels indebted to Regis for saving him, which cements his loyalty for Lucis even when he has reason to be angry at the King for sacrificing the outer provinces in the name of peace.

The third and final event led to him sacrificing his life to give the world a chance for a better future. A plot to take down Insomnia from the inside out involved betrayal from people Nyx relied on, and himself being deliberately used as a tool to leave the King and his power source near defenseless. By taking the oracle Lunafreya, the Empire created a situation in which the only path Nyx would think to take is a search and rescue. He makes the choice to ask the King to deploy the Kingsglaive, only to find out that the whole kidnapping was a trap and many of the Glaive are traitors. Nyx completes his task, but the city's defenses are destroyed and the King dies while he's powerless to save him. He ultimately chooses to sacrifice his own life to an ancient power of the city in order to make sure he completes Regis's last wish for Luna's safety.

It's at the end of his final battle, as he defeats the traitor who killed the king, that Nyx is being taken from, so once he remembers these events it will be a serious emotional and psychological hit to deal with. It's not all bad, as in his brief time with Lunafreya she introduces to him the notion that magic is not the only thing that can 'perform miracles', implying that Nyx isn't great just because he's a good Glaive.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?: Hearth, Home, and a young woman's hope for a better future.

Nyx doesn't really want for much. His life is simple outside of the war he's been enlisted to fight, and even in that his duty is clear. He's seemingly content with his one room apartment, his small family, and his singular purpose. He never wanted to be a hero. He just wants to keep what he already has and he goes to great lengths to do so. As long as the people he cares about make it home, and he can keep from losing anyone else, he's content.

WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?: Nyx seems like an arrogant glory type of person. He's saved other Glaives in battle so many times that he's earned the moniker 'hero' among them; a nickname which has made its way outside of the Glaive. It would not be unusual for someone to think he's kind of full of himself if they don't know him very well.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?: Nyx doesn't deliberately go out of his way to be heroic. It's merely a by-product of his inability to let people die if he even has a small percent chance of saving them. Especially if they mean a lot to him, like Libertus. The nickname 'hero' is a bitter source of humor for him. He failed to save his sister all those years ago and doesn't believe he should be called one.

He doesn't seem to believe his own life is worth a whole lot, especially if you take away what he can do for Insomnia. While he proves to himself eventually that he can be something even stripped of his magic, that his character and ability doesn't change with the circumstance, it's still a new revelation to adjust to.

Nyx never actively wanted to die, but thought very little about using his life to barter for the strength to carry out his king's last wish and save the only people Nyx had left in the world. He was given the option to sacrifice Libertus or Luna for the power, and was offended that they'd even ask him to make that kind of choice.

He keeps his issues to himself, but never fully deals with them. He's never shown actively grieving his losses, and though he is so very angry at the empire, he swallows the emotion rather than acts on it.

When all hope is otherwise lost, Nyx does embrace the title of Hero; it's kind of a joke at his own expense, but he never does anything by halves and ultimately is the reason Lunafreya can escape the city which leads to the story of the main game.

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?: It depends on how dire the conflict is. He very rarely rises to taunts, choosing to ignore insults rather than answer them. He'll mediate between people in order to stop a fight before it can explode. As stated above, he swallows his anger, and the only thing that seems to set him off is someone throwing insult or harm towards something he cares about. Even then he doesn't get violent towards friends.

In battle he acts decisively. While he does show an ability to plan ahead, Nyx thrives in the moment as often his opponents are unpredictable or highly skilled. Giving up is not in his vocabulary and he'll throw himself at a brick wall until it collapses if that's the path he feels he has to take. Retreat from overwhelming odds IS, however, a valid strategy as he prefers to defeat his enemy rather than die before it.

Given orders from someone he follows, he will obey them up until the moment they clash with his own moral path and ultimate goals.

In emergency situations and times of high stress Nyx compartmentalizes himself so that he can function without giving in to emotions that could cripple him.

WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:

- He remembers his small Glaive family: Libertus, Crowe, and Pelna. He doesn't know what they did, or anything that happened to them, nor anything pertaining to the rest of his missing memories, but he knows their faces and that they mean a lot to him. (If the three of them are too much, then just Libertus)

- People called him a hero, for whatever reason. He doesn't feel much like one, but the title feels personal. Perhaps a fond nickname?

- The title Kingsglaive. It applies to him and he's knows it's important but doesn't know what it means or why.

- He had a little sister named Selena.

- He can't figure out why, but he's certain that he shouldn't be alive. He did...something that was supposed to kill him.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

Kingsglaive is a very straightforward movie and very circumstance heavy. Some finer details are never explicitly stated, and the audience is given very little chance to infer what Nyx is like outside of those very specific instances beyond the surface we're shown. However, based upon what looks like lingering ptsd from the attack on his home (Nyx is shown remembering Selena's death on multiple occasions, and once had actually zoned out into a waking nightmare of himself falling while sitting at headquarters), I am led to believe that he has trouble coping fully with how he feels, and as a result can't entirely express them anymore. It's easier for him to just shove it down, do his job, and cope.

This especially comes into focus during the search and rescue mission. Nyx clearly cares a LOT for his brothers in arms. Many of them said they owe him their lives several times over, it's explicitly shown that he disobeys a strict retreat order to go save his best friend. This also implies to me that the Glaives were taught to just leave the dead behind, because if they're retreating it's not a good idea to stick around, which would make Nyx even more noticeable for not being able to do so. However, in rescuing Luna, and learning of the betrayal of his own brothers, Nyx never flinches when he fights them. He assesses them as an enemy and takes action in a very direct fashion. I don't believe this would be possible, with how much Nyx cares for people, unless he shuts part of himself down to do his job, like flipping a switch.

He's able to stay level headed because he doesn't stop to think about it; doesn't allow himself to feel it. He almost breaks when Regis dies, willing to fight Glauca even knowing he'd likely die trying, but with Luna there to remind him of his duty, he's pulled back on track and doesn't waver. It will be something he'll eventually have to deal with.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES:

Skills: Nyx is an incredibly skilled soldier in an elite group of people who, to sum up in a single word, are basically trained assassins. The Navy Seals of Lucis. It can be argued that Nyx is the best of them. He's in top physical form, skilled with knives, and experienced in fighting large armies as part of a small strike force. He relies heavily on his magic to move around unpredictably and with great speed, but is still more than capable of fighting without it.

Abilities: Nyx is unusually good at using the magic gifted to the Kingsglaive by King Regis. He is capable of using magic for longer periods of time in succession without tiring, and suffers less obvious signs of magic strain. Just before his canonpoint he requests the ancient power of the old Kings and is found worthy, granted the full power of Lucis in exchange for his life. It's his own magic until it kills him, rather than a borrowed gift that was otherwise lost with the death of the King.

He'll still have this in game, but he's now separated from Insomnia Nyx will not have access to the Old Wall and will largely stick to the list of spells he's familiar with.

Elemental Spells- Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder are pretty self-explanatory. He can summon fire, ice, and lightning at will to various degrees of strength. The stronger the spell, the more energy it takes, and Nyx will have to rest for a time before he can use it again.

Protect: Summons a barrier between himself and oncoming damage. It is breakable, and the amount of damage it can sustain depends on how much energy was put into it and how big an attack is. The faster he puts it up, the easier it is to shatter.

Phase Shifting: A short distance 'step' teleportation used to dodge immediate attacks.

Warp Shifting: A long distance teleportation using a thrown weapon as an anchor to summon oneself to.

Physical Weaknesses: Magic strain is something Nyx has to keep an eye on, especially now that it's entirely his own. It draws upon his own energy and life to function which means that even as talented as he is he will wear down with overuse. Magic strain has a slow, physical affect on the body, and while it would take years for the more obvious effects (the Kings wielding it age much faster than normal men), there are scars on use chest from years of use, plus some lingering scars from his final battle that will remain.

At full power he'd burn up the rest of his life force using the King's magic, but outside of his own world, the strength of its potentially has gone down considerably and probably won't end up resulting in his death ever, though he may feel weakened by overuse.

On entrance to the game he'll have limited use in his left arm as it had been in a bad way at his canonpoint. This will take time to heal, and will keep a lightning pattern of scars leading up to his face. He'll also have two bullet scars in his abdomen from being shot by Luche.

INVENTORY: Nyx doesn't have much on him by the end. His uniform is heavily damaged, missing a sleeve, partially burnt, and his only weapons are a single kukri and two tiny knives in their shared leg sheath.

As for the three items:

1) His second kukri, lost in a failed warp and found later by Libertus who keeps it.

2) His Corkboard of Memories (TM). Basically just a small collection of photos, clippings, and drawings that hold sentimental value to him all tacked to a corkboard on his desk. It's the only thing he really owns.

3) If the above is okay as one item, then I'd like to give him a spare Kingsglaive jacket, because it's tragic what happened to the one he was wearing.
